The National Association of Computer and Communications Workers (NACWC) says that more than two million of the nearly 5 million people who enrolled in computer and technology classes last year were employed in the industry.
The group says the number is on pace to exceed 6 million this year.
That’s because of the increase in technology and Internet-related jobs.
The union says it’s worried about the pace of new graduates.
“We know that the number of people who are entering this job market in 2018 has been increasing rapidly, and we are worried that if the number continues to grow, we’ll see this workforce shrink,” said NACWC President Tom O’Donnell.
“This is an industry that has been losing people at a rapid pace.”
O’Connell added that employers are looking to find ways to increase the pool of workers they employ.
“What we’re hearing from employers is that they are looking for workers who are good at learning how to use a computer,” O’Brien said.
The numbers were released as the industry prepares for the federal budget, which is set to take effect this week.
The NACSCW said in a news release that the increase reflects more workers joining the tech and computer fields.
And the group is warning employers to watch out for students who are looking up to get into the industry: “This could be the beginning of a downward spiral for an industry with a workforce that’s shrinking.
If you want a job that pays the bills and makes a good living for you and your family, you need a strong job,” ODonnell said.
